Tommy Cloce honored again

Postby announcer on Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:28 pm

As reported in the Watertown Daily Times, Tommy Cloce has been selected by ASA to race in South Africa Jan. 29-31 of 2010. The race will be a 207 lap 500 kilometer event that will be run at the 1.5 mile Phakisa Freeway oval in Welkom. The event is called the Championship Between the Continents, South Africa versus USA Motorsports.

It may be some time till we see a season again like the one Tommy just had. I was privileged to see Maynard Troyer's domination at Lancaster, Jim Shampine at Oswego, and Richie Evans and Steve Kinser at just about everywhere. More recently there was Greg Furlong at Oswego and Danny Lasoski in Knoxville, Iowa. Tommy's 2009 season at AIS compares to those great years, and the whole team is to be congratulated. They certainly worked for it.

Check out the South African speedway at www.phakisa.com. Veryy impressive looking facility! Congrats to Tommy, his family, and his team!

Will the race be broadcast on tv any time in 2010? I'll be in Mississippi at that time.

There's an ASA link on the Phakisa speedway web site that gives some details about the track. Geoff Bodine will be competing in the race, but they don't name any other drivers yet. The ASA link doesn't take you to the ASA-Racing web site. It's all about the January 2010 race and how Dennis Huth got the event started. It's a good read if you have about 5 minutes to spare. The track is being compared to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in shape and configuration. Should be a fun race for Tommy. It makes no mention of what cars they will race there, but they will host a driving school prior to the race to help the South African drivers become familiar with stock cars.
