Track Tire?

Postby lefthander12 on Wed Mar 10, 2010 12:38 pm

Uhm, you're gonna shoot yourselves in the foot if you put the trucks on a $100 racing radial. I don't know if anybody was spending more than $60 for a tire at AIS. I ran my Falkens for almost 2 years and I think I was paying $58.00/tire. I'm out of tires now, and was set to order some next week, if the track would have waited any longer for the rules I'd have been screwed! (rules must not be the only thing we're taking from AIS).

I assume it's safe to say that some of the other LT teams have tires left over, and may not have budgeted for new rubber to start the season (I can't be the only poor one out there). Many of these same teams already have the added expense of towing farther to a new speedway. I would hate to see this class lose trucks b/c they're not going to or (like me) can't afford to spend a pile of dough on tires.

Secondly, take a good look at the calender, mine says about 5 weeks until practice. When does the speedway plan on announcing what tire we''ll be on. Will these tires be available to all the teams that need/want them?

The above is just my opinion. Anybody else have thoughts/insight?

Track Tire?

Postby Oldguy on Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:31 pm

I believe that Light Truck tires should stay at last year's rule.

Teams have run DOT radials and have produced excellent racing and good sized fields.

What is the advantage of the additional expense for teams and a smaller field for the speedway? Racing tires will produce higher speeds that yield harder crashes.

Just my opinion...

Tires may become an issue. Not because of the track but the possibility of the 890 being discontinued. what is the easiest answer? Run 890 and see if we run out ? run a new tire and all buy new? Or wait and see if Hoosier can gaurantee 890 tires for the season?

The 790 is the front running tire for the 4 cylinder class, but their again it must be available.

The trucks should be the same tire rule as before. Terry would like to see the 790 on the trucks. I would not. I have talked with Greg Smith about this and he was very receptive to it.

the late models have the same issue. Hoosier was supposed to talk with Greg today and finalize decisions. A little more to these desisions than most people think.

My advice to the Truck class is to call Greg or Terry and express your wishes. The decision is theirs to make and neither one of them views this board. Many decisions they have to make are based on the advice they are getting over the phone wich is sometimes misleading or self-serving. I don't have a number for Terry, Greg's number is 629-4356.

Thanks for the info Randy. As I guessed there was more to this than just someone's decision. I think it's important for everyone to realize that the two guys that are making decisions don't ever read this board. Kinda makes a lot of the ideas posted on here basically useless unless they are conveyed to those two guys. I guess that we all need to call Greg with some of these issues if we want something changed to benefit the racers. If it all just ends up on here it's useless. I'll be giving him a call to ensure we stay on the 790's if possible.

Just got off the phone with Greg Smith. Fellas, He's looking for input and opinion's on the tire rule. I mentioned to him where I live, What I'm running on, and what past years rules were at Adirondack. I also stated that I'm only running what limited Schedule I can without buying new tires. If a track tire is put in place, I will not be running Whatsoever at evans mills. Being now its tacking on an extra 40 or so miles that I need to make up in fuel. And thats just one way. By all means guys. Give Greg a call. 315-629-4356. Thanks for the phone number Randy. By the way. Your not the only poor racer out there. Why do You think we run Light Trucks.

I read the boards and Terry reads the important stuff over my shoulder. Relax, there is alot of lobbying going on about the tires for the trucks. I'll tell you what I think. Get everyone one on the 790's period. SC and LT can now loan each other tires back and forth. Don't tell me people arent putting tires in a lathe and shaving them, it's happening. Not everyone has access to the same tire as the other guy at the same price either. 790 cost the same for everyone. Those trucks that had a huge tire advantage, just got brought back to the field, being on the same tire as everyone else. Terry ran a set all season plus testing and then they sat on the car on the ground all winter, no changes went out and won against all the new fresh tires that were put on the SC cars. If the trucks run them it will also give the SC another rim size available we didn't have in the past. 13 and 14 were all we had 77" roll out on the 14" size. It will be painful in the beginning. Might not matter anyways because they have to be available in the first place.

Track Tire?

Postby themadman09 on Thu Mar 11, 2010 8:36 am

As for the super stocks I am in favor of the 980's. these are a slick with the same compound as the 880's. They are about an inch wider and thay will also last. (Remember this track has a top coat on it unlike AIS). This will make for more side by side racing at the tight track and they cost the same. This is if we HAVE to deal with Hoosier. Super Stock Winning Check is $200. That will not even get you into the gate, fuel and a tire for the night. Why not look into an american racer 8" tire for the Super Stocks??? About $50-60 each = $240 a set vs $440 a set??? Makes sense to me. Just a thought but were not running the sprint cup here and Hoosier does nothing for us that i have seen, so why must it be a hoosier tire?
Thanks

I would say the cheaper the tire the better? I'm not racing but i know how it is to have kids and a wife that *Word Censor* about how much it costs to race! I can't believe the open compression rule is actually sticking.. How can racers build these engines for $200 to win? You would have to win 3 or 4 races to pay for the crank!! I know we don't do it to make money but come on. budget is everything in this sport, sponsors are very hard to find in this economy. If the super stocks are the premiere class why isn't the pay out bigger? not complaining just asking...

Mike, Hoosiers haven't done anything for you because we have to run bricks. The 880's or whatever we have to run up here are like the old commanche tire. If you put a set of 970's on your car I guarantee you will be 4 tenths faster! I've been using Hoosier for around 15 years and I haven't seen anything come close, not goodyear, american racer, or mccreary. I do support the fact that we should get more tire for the $100 plus price tag we pay. The 970's or the 980's cost almost the same as the bricks but are wider, and they make for better, faster racing. I'm thinking that if we paid $50 or $60 for a tire it doesn't sound all that great (maybe from the cost aspect) but if you look at the performance aspect, you get what you pay for.
