I understand the need for a stock 4 cylinder class, and believe entirely with the concept. I think that it is a great way for someone to get into racing for a very cheap price tag. But I also see the need for a “modified” type 4 cylinder class such as the AIS cars.

There are a group of people who want to drive a car that is able to be tuned with a coil over suspension, that we can gain some horsepower with the motor, and can have the freedom to do some other things (Spoilers, etc.) A stock 4 cylinder car, without being able to have tunable suspensions, etc. is running at the ragged edge, and in most cases, way over what it was designed to do. I see the modified 4 cylinder class as a way to be able to add components to address the weak areas of a “stock” 4 cylinder car, to improve handling, have a racing tire, etc to have more of a performance race car feel.

Again, entry level stock classes are great, they have close racing, close competition and a low price tag. But when someone is looking to step up to a car that is tunable and a bit more responsive, there must also be classes for that. The modified 4 cylinder AIS cars fill that need. There has to be a balance of entry level classes, and also a class for someone looking to improve on what they already have. The fact that these are the same exact cars and chassis are great. It allows someone to get their feet wet with the stock class, then add components as they go to move into a secondary class without buying totally new equipment.

In addition I don’t see the AIS cars as a “fortune” to run. I’ve run one for two years now with about the budget that I did Kart racing. Granted there is a greater start up cost, but a competitive kart setup is around 2,000 dollars nowadays, and there is a great following for the karts in this area. For an AIS type 4 cylinder car with a similar price tag, it allows someone who is kart racing the opportunity to jump into a car that has adjustability (caster, camber, spoilers, coilovers, etc.) not regulated by what the car was originally built with. Many kart racers in this area are very, very good at setting up their karts and equipment, and there is a need for a class that allows that type of racer to do the same with a car.

Just wanted to throw my opinion in here. I look forward to racing at the Mills this coming summer if our class is there. I Think this can and will be a great facility for all involved. I agree with the class structure above if the late models are not run there. I think 5 classes, if run cleanly and quickly, can be a great show for the fans. the more excitement you can put on the track, with the greatest number of classes in a race nite is the best for the fans and racers.

Billy,

I would like to see the Late Models run at Evans Mills. I know there are several other Late Model drivers out there looking for a place to go for 2010, including myself. Even if it were on a limited basis I'm sure you would see a good car count. You made a great point that the season starts with 15-16 cars then peaks at 22 or so. I think it is worth mentioning that some people do work weekends like myself and if the car gets tore up one weekend sometimes it is difficult to make it the following weekend if you don't have the help. I am excitied to see Evan Mills and the possibility of running there in 2010. From the pictures I saw Evans MIlls is a completely different track from AIS. I plan on stopping up this weekend and check out the track. Will there be any management there Staurday or Sunday?

thats what i said, sport compacts, this would allow the stock 4 cylinder guys room to move up if they wanted to, also a stock 6 cylinder class would allow moving up to true stocks if they wanted to, what is the super stock class, is it the same as the true stocks? i am just waiting on the list of classes, there isnt much sence of putting my car back together if there is no class to run it in. as far as late models, i dont know if they would have the room to pass much, might end up being a follow the leader type race due to how narrow the track is, but that is my opinion. it might work but i dought it. i am really pushing for the entry level stock classes, this would allow alot more people the affordability to race and also the entry level classes seem to bring the most people into the stands, atleast thats how it was when evans mills was asphalt before.

OH AND I FORGOT THE TWIN AFTERBURNERS. No seriously , look at the rules posted at the AIS site this will give you an idea what the difference is between true stocks and superstocks

no i was just trying to figure out if there was a true stock class anymore or was it converted over to super stocks but even with an additional class it would still be managable with 6 classes i think. i guess we will all find out next week, might get the old daytona closer to the garage this week just in case it snows

Wow until just a few minutes ago I found out that this forum was still alive!! I also just found out today that AIS has shut it's doors for next year. And even better news, actually the best news I've heard in a long time "Evans Mills to Asphalt". I guess I've been living under a rock for a few months. I have a nice super stock sitting in my garage that I recently traveled to Michigan to pick up. After I read the news about AIS today my heart sank because I would be left without a track to race at!
I've read several other tracks rulebooks including mountain, shangra la 2,Airborne, Spencer, Lake Erie, Mahoning Valley. Not to make anyone upset but all of these rules were way off and I almost had to stop reading them.If you're going to have a superstock class you can't restrict the racer so much for example- telling them what type of air cleaner housing to run, or no powerglides (just 350 turbo or saginaw manual) or overly strict on steering components which are getting very hard to find for a true old super stock, just to name a few.

I have a few suggestions for superstock rules

hoosier 970 tire
8 inch rims various offsets
aftermarket clutches with saginaw trans
powerglide or 350 t with working torque converter
maximum track width?
ford 9 inch no penalty (no gun drilled axles or aluminum components) floaters ok
aftermarket intake to be specified by track Gm edelbrock #2101 or #2116 with 1" adapter for box stock 4412 no weight penalty for a $120 dollar intake
no cockpitted interiors maintain "stock appearing" firewall/floorboard to rear of main hoop
*10.5:1 max compression ratio
4 or 5 inch ride height
allow brake bias valves and aftermarket pedals
allow howe stock replacement centerlinks http://howeracing.com/c-439-stock-type-steering.aspx
cast iron calipers and spindles only
aftermarket tubular upper control arms with stock type shocks

most importantly allow the 8602 staurday night special crate motor WITH A FOUR BARREL CARB WHICH IT WAS DESIGNED FOR DON'T COPY SHANGRA LA OR ANY OF THESE OTHER TRACKS LIKE AIS HAS DONE BEFORE..

now with this being said if you want a super restrictive class run something called the pure stocks or lead sleds they can't change anything not even the springs and they run radials and stock everything like a junkyard dog class.

The super stocks could be a huge addition to your program especially if an equal, fair, and more updated set of rules for the current time is enforced.

My husband and I are sorry to see AIS close, we will miss the racing, the camping and good times we all shared while there for the weekends. We wish Paul good luck in the future. To hear Evans Mills was removing the dirt on their race track was exciting news that racing black top was not lost for people who dont want to travel long distance to enjoy a good night of racing. I'm sure there is many happy drivers to know there will be a place to race. It's always hard to make changes and move on but we all need to support the Capara/VanTassel family in their move and changes and be there for the races. :D

Chuck I'll check on the reserved number list. I'll be at the track at 12 noon on Saturday probably until we close the gates at 5pm.

Got the car next to garage yesterday, she aint pretty after sitting all these years but she still turns over, brakes and shifter froze up, anybody got a front wheel drive dodge car or caravan sitting around? need a shifter cable and some wiring that goes to the tranny solenoid box. also need a fuel pump out of an older ford truck that is mounted on the frame rail, either ranger, bronco, broncoII, or a f series pickup have them. hopefully ill need them if they run my class........ found the fuel pump, just need a shift cable and the wiring
